X’s and O’s:
PVD vs. Binghamton 12/1/17
Providence came out of the gate with a strong start, and were rewarded with an early goal. Kenny Agostino notched his fifth goal of the season off a shot fired from the blue line by defenseman Chris Breen. However, the Binghamton devils would respond with a late goal of their own to tie the score. Jacob MacDonald ripped a slapshot by everyone including MacIntyre for his eighth goal of the season and the equalizer. Providence would not go into the break quietly: Bruins Prospects Colby Cave and Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson played tic tac toe in front of the net, setting up fellow prospect Ryan Fitzgerald up for a powerplay goal and a 2-1 lead going into the first intermission. In the second, and with a pair of seconds remaining in a powerplay, Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson notched the second powerplay goal of the night off a feed from Brockton, MA native Josh Hennessey, and point sponge Ryan Fitzgerald. The latter completed a Gordie Howe Hat Trick late in the period in a scrap with Tim Kennedy. Fitzgerald would sit most of the third as he received a 2 minute instigating minor and 10 minute misconduct in addition to 5 for fighting. Binghamton would try to rally off a late powerplay goal by Nick Lappin, but took a late penalty and couldn’t carry the puck out of their own zone till the final ~15 seconds, sealing the win for Providence. McIntyre stood tall, turning away 28 of 30 shots, and recording a well-earned win.
PVD vs. Binghamton 12/2/17
Binghamton took a cue from Providence the night before, and commenced an all-out assault against the Bruins for the first period. They were rewarded with a goal forty seconds into the first; after a questionable early tripping call against Ben Marshall, Jacob MacDonald fired a laser guided wrist shot from the center point past Binnington to open the scoring. Binghamton would direct the pace of the next ten minutes until getting hemmed into their defensive end. The Bruins capitalized on the Devils’ scramble as Zach Senyshyn intercepted a breakout attempt and hammered it past MacKenzie Blackwood from the right faceoff circle to even the score. The remainder of the period saw chances at both ends of the ice, however the Devils seemed to be driving the momentum. However, early in the second period, Providence broke the tie with Jordan Szwarz’s first goal of the night. As a penalty expired, Austin Czarnik fed Colton Hargrove, who one timed the puck from the point. The rebound tumbled out of Blackwood’s reach and Jordan Szwarz had charged toward the crease and snuck the puck by Blackwood. Before the period ended, Bracken Kearns tied the game for the second time, making a pass across the crease to a waiting Nick Lappin who tapped the puck home. Jordan Szwarz broke the tie and scored his second goal of the night 10 minutes into the 3rd off an outlet pass from Austin Czarnik that beat Blackwood clean. 33 seconds later, Rob O’Gara added an insurance marker from long range. As the play was turning up ice, O’Gara managed to hold the puck in the attacking zone. He threw it toward the net and it took a fortunate bounce past Blackwood for the former’s first goal of the season. Chris Porter took a late 5 minute major for charging that put the Bruins on the Penalty Kill for the all-important final minutes. This time, the Bruins locked down the defensive zone, staving off late pushes by the Devils to secure a win.
PVD @ Bridgeport 12/3/17
In a Sunday afternoon matinee, Providence skated against the Sound Tigers, icing goalie Zane McIntyre against Kristers Gudlevskis in Bridgeport. Through two periods, Bridgeport and Providence traded chances, with a goal for each club before the final frame. In the final minutes of the first, Bridgeport’s Scott Eansor held a puck in the attacking zone as he headed for a change; with his teammate screening McIntyre, Eansor fired a knuckling shot that beat Zane glove side in a goal the latter would have liked to have back. In the second, Austin Czarnik intercepted an outlet pass, and fed it to teammate Anton Blidh for a 2 on 0 chance into the attacking zone. Blidh returned the feed to Czarnik who ripped it into the yawning net. Providence opened the scoring in the third period with Colton Hargrove’s 7th of the year. Austin Czarnik fed Jordan Szwarz who rang the puck off the iron behind the Bridgeport goalie. The puck trickled out into the crease then beyond where Colton Hargrove picked up the loose change, turned and slid a shot under Gudlevskis who was shimmying over to take away the net from Hargrove. Later in the period, Tommy Cross kept the puck in the attacking zone, fed it to Anton Blidh, who connected a pass to fellow grinder Sena Acolatse. The latter wired a perfect shot that broke off the glove of the netminder giving the Bruins a three-to-one lead early in the third period. The Bruins killed off two back to back penalties before the game resumed its very staccato pace. Even with the goaltender pulled, Bridgeport failed to capitalize on a pulled goalie while Austin Czarnik tucked home an empty net goal off a long bid from Jakub Zboril who got the first point of his professional career. There was a cloud to this 6 point weekend however: Ryan Fitzgerald was boarded by one of the Sound Tigers and did not return for the third period.
Plus / Minus
+ Zane McIntyre returning to 2016-2017 form boasting back to back SV% in the .900’s and rock solid performances.
+ Special teams finally make it into the plus column; PK killed 10 of 13 penalties including all 3 in a win over 9th ranked Bridgeport PP Sunday afternoon, while PVD PP went 3 of 14. Bruins PK held off the Binghamton Devils during a 5 minute major to Chris Porter, eliminating any hope of a comeback even with the Devils goalie pulled for a 6-on-4 situation.
+ Jakub Zboril had himself a weekend. In addition to the first point of his pro career on an assist to Czarnik, he was tenacious in his own end, hounding down pucks and moving them to forwards. Played a good two-way game, and managed to find a few offensive opportunities for himself.
+ Jakob Forsbacka-Karlsson, Ryan Fitzgerald, Austin Czarnik all had a multi-point weekend. Zach Senyshyn continues to gather points with a goal Saturday night, and Rob O’Gara pots his first of the season.
+ Providence continues to find scoring at all depths of its 4 lines.
+ Providence sweeps the entire weekend, accruing 6 points, enjoying a comfortable spot at 2nd in the Atlantic Division. No games were won in regulation, ensuring the win against the division opponent Sound Tigers was really a 4 point game.
+ Providence disciplined their game on Sunday afternoon, incurring a season low 3 penalties.
– Ryan Fitzgerald was boarded by one of the Bridgeport Sound Tigers players Sunday afternoon, had to be assisted off the ice, and did not return for the third period. As of now, it’s being termed an UBI, though that’s subject to change. Suspecting/speculating a concussion.
– Bruins were forced to play catchup on Saturday and Sunday, surrendering the first goal in both tilts.
